Twitter Tools and Marketing Success Tips

Twitter Tools and Marketing Success Tips

So you are interested in marketing your business using Twitter. Great! Read on and we will give you some ideas to consider that will improve and focus your efforts.

Twitter is about sending short 140 character messages to other Twitter users called followers. Typically newbie Twitter marketers use a lot of messages that are focused solely to their sound bites. But you probably do not need to be told that using a one way TV and Radio advertising model does not work so well in an interactive environment, especially on Twitter.

There are lots of Twitter tools available that automate the follower building and tweeting process.

Something important to consider however is how much you enjoy it when telemarketers use those auto-diallers to try to hook you with a ‘free vacation’ that is not free and probably would not be much of a real vacation neither? Would you feel differently if there was a real human reading a script as opposed to a pre-recorded message? Or what about a real human even attempting to engage you in a conversation about the vacation?

If you are like most people you probably would be more receptive to a real human for the simple reason that you can relate to a human, you can have a two way conversation with a human and you can even disagree with a human. These activities and emotions are all part of a normal day’s life, but certainly impossible with a machine.

The key to using Twitter marketing tools is to be human but not 100% human. You have to sound and act like a human in 140 characters but you probably do not want to sit behind keyboard all day long typing tweets. To reach a wide market you need a lot of followers to read your message but you cannot sit and develop a personal relationship with each of them. The best way to accomplish this is to use both automated Twitter tools and posts tweets interactively from your computer or smartphone.

On top of writing a lot of tweets you have to make sure that you are focused on a real discussion. This is critical. While 140 characters is not very long, a clever choice of words can communicate to your followers that you are a real person with opinions, views and even willing to argue a bit because you think they are worth holding. Like any effective marketing telephone call, you have to start a two way discussion.
Here is our simple strategy that seems to work well.

First of all you have to respect the Twitter users. Spamming stupid messages, repetitive and duplicate tweets should be avoided. You are trying to attract customers as followers not drive them away. Always use the # operator to tag trade names or product names. It helps people search for your tweets to find out more about what you are talking about. It also ensures that your tweets are searchable by others trying to find your products and services.
Yes it is true that somebody might start at your tweets, search and end up somewhere else or even at a competitors account or website. However that is the way our market places work so do not fight it, help people find what they want and they are more likely to come back for more of what you offer.

Secondly you have to have a message. A single focused message that you are going to discuss over and over again. For example when somebody asks you what you do or where you are employed you have a similar answer that you give every time. It is the same on Twitter, you have to stay focused and that means being creatively repetitive of your marketing message.

Thirdly you have to wrap your message in current events. This means that your tweets need to be topical but somehow related to current events to ensure that your followers subconsciously understand that you are human and have similar interests. By being current you say without saying that you are involved with your twitter account on a daily basis.

An easy way to do this is to ReTweet or RT somebody else tweets and add a few words of commentary yourself. A more sophisticated way is to try and start a conversation. Of course that is a bit harder once you have a lot of followers.

Lastly use an automated tool to follow followers back and drip a series of sales messages every few hours to the account. Use these messages as a basic explanation of your business, its products and services. Tweet interactively a couple times a day to add the human aspect and raise the interest levels of your followers.
